Summary
The NEA received $75 million in CARES Act funding and awarded direct grants to nonprofit arts organizations across the country to help save jobs in the arts sector and keep the doors open to the thousands of organizations that add value to America's economy and the creative life of our communities. In addition to direct grants to eligible nonprofit organizations, local and state arts agencies were awarded funds to regrant to arts organizations in their communities.
The NEA announced the arts organizations recommended for direct funding in July 2020, including the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, which was one of nine local arts agencies nationally to receive $250,000 in regranting funds. The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture will make 10 to 15 grants up to $25,000 to Phoenix-based arts and culture nonprofit organizations, with budgets under $1 million to fill, rehire, or maintain a part-time or full-time position from being cut due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The applicant must demonstrate how this position strengthens the organization's operations and future, and how they plan to sustain the position after the grant funds are used.
The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture opened the grant application on Monday, Aug. 31, 2020 and the deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 18, 2020. Applications will be reviewed by a review panel on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020. Panel recommendations will be forwarded to the Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission on Oct. 13, 2020 to review and recommend for funding, ensuring these organizations are good stewards of public funding. To expedite these relief funds, the Commission's recommendation would be sent to City Council for its approval on Oct. 21, 2020.
