Summary
History
In 2024 the City of Phoenix launched its inaugural 602 Day. The celebration is designed to recognize and celebrate Phoenix as a great place to live, work and enjoy life. The primary goal of 602 Day is to highlight and build partnerships with local businesses, cultural organizations, and community groups to create engaging events and meaningful community outreach activities that build civic pride. This initiative aligns with similar Area Code Day celebrations held nationwide where cities commemorate their unique area codes with dedicated community events. Accordingly, Phoenix’s “602” Day and unofficial holiday is celebrated annually on June 2. During the inaugural year over 100 businesses and organizations participated. Participation grew to over 250 during the second year.
Business and Organization Participation
The third celebration in 2026 was the most successful year yet. 602 Day generated strong business engagement and community participation across Phoenix with more than 450 local businesses, restaurants, retailers, cultural organizations and community partners participating citywide. The Community and Economic Development Department conducted extensive outreach through direct business engagement, partner organizations, social media direct message, email campaigns, and stakeholder coordination to encourage participation and promote local deals and activations.
Staff worked closely with businesses across Council Districts to increase visibility, drive foot traffic and encourage residents to support local establishments. Outreach efforts also included collaboration with business associations, sports organizations, and community partners to expand awareness and participation. The result was one of the largest and most successful 602 Day celebrations, highlighting Phoenix pride while supporting small businesses and the local economy.
Department and Employee Engagement
Alongside business engagement efforts, staff collaborated with City departments who designed engaging and interactive events for the residents. These collaborations provide departments with valuable opportunities to showcase their ongoing programs and initiatives to broader audiences, fostering greater awareness and participation among community members. Departments have the opportunity to introduce residents to services and programs they may not have previously been aware of, supporting overall civic engagement.
This year, the Library Department offered a special “602 Day Badge” as part of their annual Summer Reading Program which kicked off in June. Additionally, additional crafts and activities throughout the day and month were offered at all Library facilities. The Fire, Street Transportation, and Parks and Recreation departments hosted a Bike Rodeo where children received important bicycle safety tips, a free bicycle helmet, additional safety information and road safety yard signs for the families. Human Services Department hosted events at their Senior Centers and Community Centers including 602 Day themed crafts, resource fairs, games and more. These are only a few examples of the departments that participated by providing activities for the residents, and participation continues to grow each year.
Staff coordinated a comprehensive collection of internal employee engagement initiatives throughout the month of June leading up to 602 Day. The initiatives are designed to celebrate City of Phoenix employees who make our community a great place to live, work and thrive. The celebration also strengthened connection and reinforced organizational pride. Highlights include employee celebration events that provided meaningful opportunities for staff to gather, enjoy refreshments and feel appreciated for their service. To extend recognition beyond these events, electronic kudos offered a simple and accessible way for employees to acknowledge colleagues. Wellness efforts were also elevated through an employee step challenge, motivating staff to get active through friendly competition and collective goal-setting. Rounding out the initiatives, the 602 Day Swag Store offered branded merchandise that helped build excitement and foster a sense of unity across departments.
Marketing and Communications
Publicity and public awareness is a key component of 602 Day. Various strategic publicity tactics were used to encourage businesses to participate and promote the campaign as a whole. A core tactic included traditional media outreach, yielding coverage from every local media outlet with a publicity value of more than $80,000 and a reach of nearly 10 million according to media monitoring software. Additionally, organic social media productions resulted in approximately 500,000 impressions from official City platforms (English and Spanish), and paid social media advertising yielded an additional 500,000 views. Beyond official City of Phoenix accounts, social media monitoring software indicated 11 million potential impressions (views) and 99 percent positive sentiment for the overall campaign.
Additional tactics included materials to support business engagement direct outreach such as post cards, window clings and stickers. Placement was also secured in several prominent newsletters, the downtown kiosks and Legends digital billboard displays.
The website, 602Day.com, managed by the Community and Economic Development Department, saw more than 130,000 page views. The page included an interactive map developed by the Information Technology Services (ITS) GIS team which showed a visualization of all of the participating physical or online businesses.
An analysis through the Zencity community engagement platform said, “602 Day sustained its 2025 reach while earning its warmest reception yet, confirming the event as an established civic fixture. Residents engaged most enthusiastically with the deals as an affordable outing; civic pride and small-business support both registered as genuine but quieter signals, suggesting room to convert transactional excitement into the deeper identity and local-economy goals the City intends.”
The 602 Day Planning Committee has begun preparations for the fourth annual 602 Day on Wednesday, June 2, 2027. Taking into consideration the feedback by those who participated and supported the event, the Committee will continue making improvements to the program, emphasizing our commitment to innovation and cultivating civic pride.
