Pueblo Public Art Deaccession
Description
This report requests the Community and Cultural Investment Subcommittee recommend City Council approval of the deaccession of Pueblo, a public art project located at Marivue Park by Arizona artist Ron Gasowski. The artwork is in disrepair and no longer adheres to the artist's original design intent. The artist was completed in 1989 with a budget of $18,000.

Summary
Through the 34 years, the artwork has been exposed to the elements, and the materials have worn and degraded to the point that the artwork is no longer a suitable representation of the artist's design intent. Additionally, safety is a major concern. The artwork now has a greater potential to fall over as the interior structures are exposed to the elements and show rust. Mr. Gasowski is aware of the intent to deaccession and dispose of the artwork and is in agreement with the plan.
Local contractors will be hired to complete this work, under supervision of the Office of Arts and Culture's collection manager. More information about the project can be found at phoenix.gov/arts/public-art-program/explore-the-collection/nuestropueblo.
Financial Impact
It will cost approximately $5,000 to $6,000 to deaccession and dispose of the artwork. This includes testing of ceramic materials for asbestos, as well as the labor to remove and dispose of the material. The Fiscal Year 2023-24 Public Art Maintenance Budget will provide the funding to complete the work.
Concurrence/Previous Council Action
The Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission reviewed and recommended this item for approval on May 9, 2023, by a vote of 9-0.
