Report
Summary
Since its establishment in 1958, St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church has served as an anchor institution in this Phoenix neighborhood. For nearly seven decades, it has been a central pillar of Serbian-American heritage in Arizona, providing consistent spiritual, cultural, and community support to generations of residents. The church’s work contributes to neighborhood resilience, civic pride, and cross-cultural education, reinforcing the City of Phoenix’s commitment to inclusive community development.
A key component of St. Sava’s community engagement is its annual Serbfest, now widely recognized as one of the region’s most significant Serbian cultural celebrations. Serbfest brings together thousands of attendees from across Phoenix and beyond, offering the public an accessible introduction to Serbian traditions through food, music, dance, folklore presentations, historical exhibits, and interfaith community activities.
The festival strengthens local cultural tourism and fosters meaningful cultural exchange among diverse Phoenix residents. In addition to its cultural value, Serbfest promotes neighborhood vitality by drawing visitors to the area, increasing engagement with local businesses, and providing a welcoming environment for families and community partners.
The City of Phoenix has formally acknowledged these contributions through multiple proclamations, including celebrations of Serbfest, recognition of Serbian Heritage Days, and the declaration of November as Serbian Heritage Month. These recognitions highlight the festival’s role in broadening cultural understanding and reinforcing Phoenix’s dedication to honoring its diverse communities.
Beyond Serbfest, St. Sava continues to provide essential spiritual guidance, cultural preservation programs, youth education, charitable initiatives, and consistent community services. Its presence has strengthened social cohesion and provided a stable gathering space for both Serbian American families and the wider Phoenix community.
