Summary
City of Phoenix department representatives, the National Football League (NFL), Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee (SBHC), and stakeholders have been meeting and planning for months to bring the 2023 Super Bowl LVII to the Phoenix Region. The City of Phoenix has not hosted this event since 2015.
The Phoenix Convention Center will host the indoor Super Bowl Experience and NFL Super Bowl Media Center, while Margaret T. Hance Park was selected to host the outdoor Super Bowl Experience and music festival. Other venues in the City’s downtown core include the Footprint Center, Symphony Hall, and several downtown hotels.
Public safety departments and functions including the Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, Police Department, and the Homeland Defense Bureau have been working with other City staff, the NFL, SBHC, and Phoenix Downtown Inc. to develop a comprehensive safety and security plan. These planning efforts include development and participation in several tabletop exercises designed to test and strengthen event security plans. Several exercises have already been completed and additional exercises are scheduled for November, December, and January including one for City staff scheduled to occur on Jan. 12, 2023. The purpose of these exercises is to reinforce the following objectives:
- Provide for the safety and security of community members and visitors.
- Provide a safe and secure environment to host all events.
- Provide a framework for the collaboration and information sharing among stakeholders throughout the region.
Currently, there are no known threats for Super Bowl LVII and related events. Enhanced measures have been implemented in the areas of cyber security and critical infrastructure protection. Community outreach and awareness efforts are currently underway throughout the City and across the region. The “See Something, Say Something” national campaign has proven successful in previous large-scale events to the Valley and there is enhanced collaboration with local, state, county and federal partners to address the issue of Human Trafficking. The City of Phoenix All Hazard Incident Management Team in partnership with the regional public safety group has developed a safety and security model that is unprecedented throughout the nation. Application of this model is enhanced by the strength of the combined partnerships at the local, county, state, and federal levels. This will ensure a safe, secure, and successful Super Bowl LVII.
Location
Official Super Bowl event venues in the downtown area will include: Phoenix Convention Center, Margaret T. Hance Park, Footprint Center, and Symphony Hall. Additionally, staff expects that other events and venues in the downtown area during Super Bowl week will be announced in the coming months.
