Consideration of Citizen Petition Related to Facial Recognition and Surveillance Technologies

 

Description

This report provides the City Council with information regarding a citizen petition submitted by Mr. Eric Brock, Jr. at the June 26, 2019 Formal City Council meeting about facial recognition and surveillance technologies (Attachment A).

Summary

The petitioner requests the "City Council to consider and enact within fifteen (15) days a resolution directing City of Phoenix staff to research, outline, and define acceptable uses of these [facial recognition and surveillance] technologies, measures to secure the data collected, and limitations of these technologies, for the purpose of formulating a city-wide policy to be considered by Council at a future date to be determined at the direction of Council."

 

Mayor Kate Gallego released a memo to the City Council on Aug. 2, 2019 with updated subcommittee assignments. One of the charges of the Land Use and Livability Subcommittee is to review citizen petitions. Staff recommends this petition be forwarded to the Land Use and Livability Subcommittee for consideration.
