Summary
The current Police Headquarters facility located at 620 W. Washington St. was constructed in 1975 and over time, has become functionally obsolete due to the City’s significant growth, the age of the facility and cost of required maintenance and repairs. In October 2021, the City acquired the former Wells Fargo Plaza properties at 100 W. Washington St. as a replacement.
Staff immediately began preparing the facilities for City use, from procurement of property management services to installation of security systems and access controls and additional building systems analysis. In 2022, core building infrastructure repairs and sustainability improvements were engineered and information technology, fire alarm and 911 equipment was procured in advance due to anticipated long lead times.
Additionally, a consultant team worked closely with staff to assess the current and future operational needs of the Police Department. The goal was to address today’s police facility needs, anticipate space requirements over the next 20 years, and incorporate the entire analysis into plans for the 27 floors of the 100 West Washington property. Architects, engineers, contractors and consultants are currently implementing these plans alongside staff.
Infrastructure repairs are underway, critical equipment has been ordered and design is progressing. The first phase of work focuses on the top three occupiable floors of the tower that will be dedicated to the Communications Bureau, which includes 911 operations. Major construction on that space is anticipated to commence in summer 2023 with completion projected in summer 2024.
The future workspace of many other bureaus will follow as phased construction throughout the project is expected to be completed in spring 2025. Furniture installation, familiarization tours and equipment testing can occur in phases as various floors are completed. Staff move-ins can be expected to occur from summer 2024 to summer 2025. The exact timing will be determined by construction requirements and the operational needs of each bureau.
