Report

Summary

The YouthBuild Phoenix program is a nonresidential, community-based alternative education program that provides classroom instruction and occupational skills training along with leadership development and community services to help ensure that the youth maintain a connection to their communities through service and volunteerism.  The City's grant will assist a minimum of 66 at-risk youth ages 16 to 24.  Since January 2009 to present, the Community and Economic Development Department has applied for and been awarded four YouthBuild Competitive Grants.

Program Impact

This funding will be used to provide workforce development services for young people that support High School Equivalency (HSE) completion, academic and work-related skill attainment, gainful employment and connection to vocational/post-secondary education.

The YouthBuild Program is a nationally recognized, pre-apprenticeship, comprehensive community development program that provides young people between 16 to 24 years of age the opportunity to work towards an HSE while learning construction skills.

Construction projects range from restoring multi-unit buildings to building single-family, low-income homes.  Strong emphasis is placed on leadership development and community service.

Financial Impact

There is no impact to the General Fund.  Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Labor.
